What Are the Telephone Requirements?
You’ll need a call forwarding feature for your phone line called Call Forward Busy. It forwards your busy calls to AOL Call Alert so the service can send you an alert about the call when you’re online. We make it easy to get the phone feature. In fact, in most cases we can place the order for you. If we can’t, we’ll send detailed instructions so you can call and order. It usually takes 2-5 days for the feature to be activated.
Some telephone companies charge a small, monthly fee for the necessary call forwarding features. The average fee is $1-$2 per month. Some companies may also charge a small one-time set-up fee.
What happens when I register?
When you sign up for AOL Call Alert we'll ask you to enter an AOL screen name. If you don’t have one, you can set one up right there.
We’ll also ask for some telephone information to help get the service set up on your home phone line.
Will I need to download software?
You don’t need to download any additional software for AOL Call Alert. It’s built into the AOL software, and into the AIM software, version 6.0 and higher. As long as you’re running AOL or AIM, you’ll be notified of calls.
What if I have an answering machine?
AOL Call Alert complements your answering machine. While you're online AOL Call Alert lets you know about calls so you can manage them, this includes taking messages. When you're offline, your answering machine will pick up your unanswered calls as usual.
What if I have voicemail from my telephone company?
Then we’ll suggest you get AOL Voicemail! It includes AOL Call Alert, but also takes your messages anytime you don’t answer a call – whether you’re online or not! With AOL Voicemail you can also check messages online, by e-mail as well as by telephone. It’s simply the best way to stay in touch, wherever you are.
